ARTIST STATEMENT – ‘HINTS OF THE VALLEY’EXHIBITING AT WANGARATTA PERFORMING ART & CONFERENCE CENTRE 1ST MARCH - 29TH MAY 2024

Joan Mullarvey

Mullarvey’s work crosses the border between painting and printmaking, creating bold and distinctive images.  Her primary subject matter is the environment, encompassing nature, rural and urban.  No matter the place, her eye is drawn to form and structure within the landscape, often altering the perspective, recreating the scene using observational drawing, texture, shape and repetition.  Mullarvey not only aims to inspire people to look more closely at the beauty of our dry and complex land, she also creates a sense of place and space for the viewer to enjoy.

Process is a big aspect of printmaking for Mullarvey, it allows her the freedom to experiment across all forms of printmaking, which can lead her in different directions with unforeseen discoveries, creating amazing results. Having majored in both painting and printmaking, her exhibition ‘Hints of the Valley’ depicting the rhythms and patterns of the landscape in her local surrounds is a wonderful example of the printmaking process of collagraphy; a printmaking process she is particularly drawn to, where textural collaged plates are created then inked in a very painterly way.  Each print is a hand-pulled original artwork, created through a lengthy process ending with the ‘magical moment’ when the paper is finally lifted from the matrix.

Mullarvey continues to evolve and challenge herself through experimentation with the many varying areas of printmaking.  Her works are held in various private collections both domestically and internationally and she has been the recipient of many awards and commendations.
