Biography
Joan’s powerful connection to nature and her local environment, often see’s her gathering foliage to create her bushland monoprints. Having grown up in a small town on the Murray River surrounded by nature and farmlands, Joan’s artwork has been heavily influenced by the beauty, harshness and fragility of the landscape. These surrounds also allowed Joan to appreciate the patterns and rhythms that nature creates.
“Although majoring in both painting and printmaking, printmaking became my passion; it became my voice to express both lived experiences and interests for which there are never the right words. For me process is a big aspect of printmaking, it allows me the freedom to experiment across all forms of printmaking, which can lead me in different directions with unforeseen discoveries, creating amazing results”.
Within her work Joan uses colour, line, texture and form to demonstrate her interpretations of the land, allowing for a more contemporary and abstracted sense of place. “By overlapping images and cultural themes, I invite the view to explore, connect and enjoy my artwork".
Joan is an accomplished artist living in North East Victoria and has been the recipient of many awards and commendations, most recently selected as a finalist in the biennial Inkmasters Print Exchance 2021, Tanks Art Centre, Cairns. Describing herself as an experimental printmaker, her work at times crosses the border between painting and printmaking; capturing the vastness and uniqueness of our diverse country.
